This big, full flower is similar to a real carnation but could be any large flower with multiple petals. It is made by one of the simplest of techniques: a single piece of ribbon is gathered by hand, or by machine, along one edge before being wound into a spiral shape. By adjusting the amount its ribbon petals are spread, this flower can be made to look like a newly opening bud or a grander, open bloom in its full glory.

• One piece of cream/rose bias-cut, raw-edged *silk ribbon, 54 in (138c m) long x 1 1/2 in (3.8cm) wide
• Two pieces of cream/rose bias-cut, raw-edged *silk ribbon, 54 in (138 cm) long x 1  in (2.5 cm) wide
• One piece of green/lt. blue bias-cut, raw-edged *silk ribbon, 18 in (46 cm) long x 1  in (2.5 cm) wide
• One piece of lt. green grosgrain ribbon, 18 in (46 cm) long x 7/8 in (2.3 cm) wide
• One piece of dk. green grosgrain ribbon, 20 in (50 cm) long x 1/4 in (6 mm) wide
• Small, stiff brush: a suede brush or small, brass wire brush works well

• Sewing Machine with pink or white thread
• Small scissors
• An iron that makes steam
• Hand sewing needle

*Although technically not ribbon as there is no selvage on either side, raw-edged silk is cut on the bias and sold as “silk ribbon”.
